Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu – 2 Days

Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the best option for visitors who do regular exercise and offers a wonderful days walking along a path built by our ancestors. The journey starts at 2100m (6890 feet), climbing up to 2700m (8829 feet) to sun gate, the highest point on the walk, and ends at 2400m (7874 feet), so there is no reason to worry about acclimatization or altitude sickness, This is the shorter version of the famous and stunning Inca trail for those who have less time but do not want to miss out on this unique trek.

First Day: Cusco – Wiñayhuayna – Aguas Calientes.

You will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the San Pedro train station of Cusco for a 3 hour trip to  Km104 on the Cusco – Machu Picchu Railroad line. After passing through the checkpoint station, we start our walk to the archaeological complex of Chachabamba (2150 m.). After the visit we will take on an 8-kilometer trail lasting about four hours of walking to reach the archaeological complex of Wiñayhuayna (m. 2700). This is an impressive complex made up of an agricultural center with numerous terraces, a religious sector and an urban area. Below us we have magnificent views of the Urubamba River Valley and the Choquesuysuy archaeological complex located on the other side of the river. We will see a beautiful waterfall located just minutes from Wiñayhuayna, then we climb to Intipunku, “The Gateway of the Sun.” From this point we can see the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu. We leave Intipunku and descend to Machu Picchu where we will take a bus to the town of Aguas Calientes. Overnight accommodation provided at selected hotel.

Second Day: Aguas Calientes – Machupicchu – Cusco

You will be picked up from your hotel and taken to the bus headed for the Citadel of Machu Picchu. We will then immediately begin our visit to the Inca citadel where we will go on a two hours tour. Afterwards, we will have free time to walk around the citadel, climb the mountain of Huayna Picchu, where you can see spectacular views of the Citadel of Machu Picchu, as well as the valleys and surrounding mountains or visit the temple of the moon and the fabulous Inca Bridge. In the afternoon we return to Aguas Calientes where you can visit and relax the in the thermal baths. Finally, we take the train back to Cusco, arriving at around 8.30 pm and taken to your hotel.

The Tour Does Not Include

  • Lunch and dinner on the last day:  After visiting Machu Picchu you have free time to enjoy the ruins and you can choose to eat lunch near the Citadel or in the town of Aguas Calientes.
  • Optional: Visit to the hot water springs in Aguas Calientes: You can choose to relax while waiting for the return train to Cusco. The springs are located about a 10 minute walk from the town and the entrance cost is about S/.5.00. If needed you can rent towels in town. Your arrival to Cusco is at approximately 8:30 pm.

It is recommended that you bring:

  • A backpack with a change of clothes for the trek. Also recommended: Polo shirts, short shorts and some warm clothes.
  • Rain jacket or poncho (plastic ponchos can be purchased in Cusco)
  • Hiking boots, ideal for trekking
  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Hat or cap to protect against sun, rain or cold
  • Sun block
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Toilet paper
  • Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolates, etc.
  • Water bottle and sterilizing tablets (Micropur)
  • Small towel and shower sandals, if you intend to go to the thermal baths
